The Hong Kong Chinese Chess Association has been appointed by the World Xiangqi Federation to organize the 5th World Xiangqi Championships. This event is also sponsored and co-organized by the Hong Kong Provisional Urban Council. The Championships will be conducted from November 19 to November 23 at Kowloon Park Gymnasium. More than 25 countries and regions will be participating in the event this year. There are about a hundred players; many of them are masters and grand masters, and more than twenty players are even non-Chinese.
The Hong Kong Chinese Chess Association has been established for forty five years, with the purpose of promoting and developing Xiangqi - a traditional art. The Association has organized numerous international and regional tournaments and has also taken an active part in the establishment of both the Asian Xiangqi Federation and the World Xiangqi Federation, trying her best to introduce this traditional art to the people in Asia and the rest of the world.
The year 1997 sees the historic moment of China resuming her sovereignty over Hong Kong. It is heartening to witness the smooth transition the continued prosperity and stability after the handover, and people's strengthened confidence in the future of Hong Kong. This is an opportunity for us to show the bright side of Hong Kong to the world. It is also our hope that, during these few days, all our guests, players and visitors will be getting together in a homely atmosphere.
Xiangqi is a popular sport of intelligent competition. In the past few decades, I have made every effort to promote many sorts of sports. I do wish this event a great success. In future, Xiangqi will continuously be known and developed all over the world.
